Martin van Zon
“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” – Peter Drucker
Born and educated in Europe, Interkom’s President and Founder, Martin van Zon, lived and worked in Belgium and the Netherlands prior to emigrating to Canada. He studied hotel management prior to serving as a Military Police non-commissioned officer. With this varied work and life experience, he founded Interkom back in the early 1980s and is most proud of seeing it flourish into a hub of several generations of passionate creatives and marketers specializing in helping clients succeed.
One of Martin’s proudest accomplishments was seeing Interkom recognized as one of the Top 100 advertising firms in Canada, as well as the opportunity to have led many business networks for Dutch, Belgian, and Southern African business associations in the days when networking was done face-to-face, besides participating in various other non-for-profit boards.
Being a first-generation Canadian, he is in awe of his adopted home country and fellow citizens, and finds out every day there is still lots more to see and do. His pre-Covid travels have taken him and his family to beaches, cities, museums and art galleries in countries all around the world – in particular the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe. Living, working and playing with his extended family members and close friends has always been part of his DNA.
What inspires him, even after four decades in business, is to see clients and Interkommers prosper. He revels in being able to witness the now female-led Interkom team take on new roles and new pathways to success, and above all, to enjoy working together in a work-life balanced approach. Inspiration also lies in learning every day – this currently involves getting to know, understand, and fall in love with a new puppy called Max (who once again provides a new outlet of stimulation.)
the dream team
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Will Durant
Lee Zhang, Interkom’s Managing Director, oversees the bigger picture of agency operations and project management. She ensures that the train leaves the station – on schedule, and with everything accounted for.
Lee has several degrees under her belt, most notably a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering, an MBA, and a Certificate of Accreditation from the Council for Continuing Pharmaceutical Education (CCPE.) She was also a Board Member on the Marketing Metrics Committee for the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation. In other words, she knows how to get the job done. What do chemical engineering and marketing have in common? Go figure! At Interkom, it works.
Her love of travel and adventure is what initially brought her halfway across the world and this continues to inspire her today. She is persistent and hard-working, loves reading (although it can take her a month to finish a book since there’s more ‘proofreading’ than reading), and is driven by both personal and professional goals and responsibilities.
Kayla van Zon
Kayla van Zon is one of Interkom’s Managing Partners, taking over the company from her Dad, Martin, in 2021 (no pressure at all…) Officially Don, and no longer Peggy!
With an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree from McMaster University and a Communications and Advertising Accredited Professional (CAAP), Kayla brings fresh perspectives to each project. She is a key point of contact for many of our municipal and non-profit clients, collaborating with them at every stage of the process – from defining goals and objectives and initial conceptualization to campaign planning and implementation, she knows the right combination of communication channels to reach client targets.
Kayla lives in Collingwood, Ontario with her boyfriend, Alex, and Sheepadoodle, Frankie. When not breathing all things marketing, Kayla is an avid participant in Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club, enjoys spending time outdoors skiing and golfing, and loves diving into a new Scandinavian crime series on Netflix.
Kayla is also a coffee connoisseur, sworn to never turn down a virtual or IRL coffee date.
Hans van Putten
During his more than thirty years at Interkom, Hans van Putten has worn many hats. From working stat cameras and processing film, to press approvals, account and resource management, Hans has never stopped learning and embracing new technologies.
Due to an early fascination with the “internet of things” starting when people were still going online using dial-up modems, along with a preference for the hands-on approach, Hans’s role naturally evolved into managing web and eCommerce projects. During the past fifteen years Hans has gone from project lead to lead developer, working with Creative and Account Management team members to satisfy client needs for self-managed websites that work.
Hans lives in Etobicoke, loves reading, film and photography, dabbles in music and video creation, and regularly likes to whip up a tasty stir-fried meal.
Jennifer Kettle is the creative genius behind Interkom’s design-based work… Graphic Designer/Art Director/Copywriter, all-in-one! Looks can be deceiving (argan oil, anyone?) as she brings over two decades of industry experience as an award-winning creative, both in design and pottery, to the team.
Always interested in art or anything creative as far back as she can remember, Jennifer still loves diving into a canvas with her hands and creating something magical outside of work. However, it was her high school art teacher who suggested that her style was better suited to a career in graphic design rather than venturing into a world of fine arts, which ultimately led her down this path.
Jennifer lives in Sarnia, Ontario with her daughter, Willow, and their small herd of furred and feathered babies. Outside of Interkom, she is working on writing and illustrating her own children’s book. She also loves the bohemian/midcentury modern look, has a passion for collecting handmade mugs, and would love to ultimately move to a quiet little home surrounded by the sounds of rustling trees and the music of nighttime crickets to enliven her creativity for clients even more (and where she can set up her own weekend pottery studio!)
Caitlin Ammendolia is the Digital Engagement Coordinator at Interkom. She manages, creates, and analyzes all things social media for our clients.
Prior to working at Interkom, Caitlin worked to develop and design digital content at Destination Markham and the Royal Ontario Museum. Her extensive experience in the arts and culture industry has provided her with skills in project management, program development, and community engagement. Caitlin has achieved an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History and a Project Management Certificate from the University of Toronto, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Museum and Gallery Studies from Georgian College.
Caitlin currently lives in the Greater Toronto Area and is looking to make the move north. She is always browsing her Instagram feed for creative inspiration, loves a good European vacation, and can’t live without a (very large) weekly plate of homemade pasta.
Petra Nyhuis leads the company in digital marketing strategies and their execution as the Digital Marketing Specialist. Prior to working for Interkom, she worked directly with the world’s largest social media company and picked up a few tricks along the way in business consulting, trend forecasting, tailored solutions and creative engagement that she incorporates into her advertising work.
Although her original plan was to enter the world of heritage conservation after studying history at the University of Guelph, a series of fortunate events and a love of Mad Men found her using her reading, writing and editing abilities in the marketing field instead. Keep a weather eye on the Interkom blog, as she posts monthly entries on a variety of topics there.
Petra currently resides in Calgary, Alberta with her husband and two cats. She loves anything medieval or Old West, frequently drives 10 km/h over the posted limit, and hopes to one day be delivering for clients from a quiet cabin in the Rocky Mountains.
Tyler Zwiep is Interkom’s Junior Web Developer, and he brings with him a passion for front-end web development and a strong knowledge of computer programming, balanced with an eye for design.
Tyler lives in Collingwood, Ontario with his partner and their one-year-old son. When he is not behind a computer screen, you can usually find Tyler enjoying the great outdoors: snowboarding or camping, or swimming in Georgian Bay.
Laura Snider, Interkom’s Project Coordinator, has had many years of experience working in the corporate world of manufacturing – primarily in automotive seat manufacturing for two OEMs, Chrysler and Honda. In her previous production management roles, she hired and trained people and managed assembly lines.
As a former Program Manager, her team launched new seating and headliner products, and she was also was the lead for a construction project to add additional manufacturing capacity to an existing facility. Laura holds a Supply Chain Management designation (SCMP) from Georgian College in Barrie, which helped her in real-time to ensure components arrived on schedule, at the right price, with the right quality, to be used for production assembly lines.
Laura’s animals have been a huge part of her life, and she currently has a dog and a horse. She has ridden, trained, and competed in dressage in Ontario since childhood, and is a proud owner of a Canadian Horse, or Cheval Canadien, a breed recognized by the Government of Canada as the national horse of the country in 2002. These horses played a very important role for the new settlers arriving to Upper Canada in the 1600s and Laura takes every opportunity to make people aware of them as their numbers are dwindling towards extinction.
Laura brings many strengths to the Interkom table, most notably her organizational abilities and people management skills.
